The festival features 10 jam-packed days of events for people of all ages and abilities including; Coral Coast Triathlon, RRR Mountain Bike Challenge, Great Barrier Reef Ocean Challenge, Quicksilver Reef Swim – Green Island, The Cairns Post Run for Cairns and Challenge Junior – a triathlon designed especially for kids! The pinnacle event of the festival is ‘Cairns Airport Challenge Cairns’ a gruelling iron-distance triathlon that features a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike leg that travelled one of the most scenic coastal roads in Australia towards Port Douglas and a 42.2km run that included the Cairns Esplanade before finishing in the heart of Cairns.

This is what we saw first thing on Sunday morning 19th February from the front of Coral Sands Resort. The cruise liner Queen Mary 2 called into Cairns on its first circumnavigation of Australia. Too large to go into the port, it dropped anchor just off Trinity Beach and was clearly visible from the Resort. What an exciting day, certainly causing a great deal of excitement with locals and guests alike.

The 2012 Eclipse in Cairns

Coral Sands Beachfront Resort, Trinity Beach will join the rest of the Cairns region in preparing for this spectacular astronomical phenomenon. This will occur on November 14, 2012 (Cairns time) and will be visible in Northern Australia and the Pacific Islands. Very few people have the opportunity to view a total solar eclipse as the shadow only covers a very small area of the Earth and you must be in a limited zone to see the moon cover the entire face of the sun.

Being in the right spot is essential, and the easiest spot to view the total eclipse will be in Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia. The best place to view the eclipse will be somewhere elevated facing East such as the Cairns Esplanade, Ocean View apartments, beachfront properties or island resorts.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the earth and sun close enough to block some or all of the sun’s direct light. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes in front of the sun and blocks it completely, forming a shadow on the earth. For this to occur the sun, earth and moon come in a straight line in their orbits and it will seem like the moon has covered the sun.

Why Cairns will be the best place to view the eclipse and when it will occur?

Two to five solar eclipses occur each year, and no more than two of those can be total eclipses. The 2012 Total Solar Eclipse on November 14, will best be viewed in Cairns, which is on the path of totality of the eclipse. Totality will occur just after sunrise at 6:39am EST with the Sun 14 degrees above the horizon.

Totality will last just over two minutes after which it will move out across unpopulated areas of the South Pacific. As the eclipse will attract worldwide interest booking accommodation early is highly recommended.
